Custom LASIK Risks

Custom LASIK Risks

Custom LASIK complications are rare. Risks, however, do exist, as with any surgery. Be sure you talk to your LASIK surgeon about any concerns before undergoing laser vision correction. Below is some general information concerning the potential risks and complications associated with custom LASIK.

Custom LASIK – Potential Complications

Custom LASIK is associated with complications that are similar in nature to those of conventional LASIK. However, studies on custom LASIK have shown that the risks of these complications are lower than with standard LASIK. It's been shown that complications arise in only 0.03 percent to 5.7 percent of all custom and conventional LASIK procedures combined. Almost all are resolved within six months and without permanent vision loss. An even lower percentage of complications are attributed to custom LASIK cases.

Many complications such as dry eye, inflammation, and redness can be treated using drops or artificial tears. Infections that occur can be treated with eye drops or oral medications.

Other complications can result from the hinged corneal flap that is created during the procedure. If the flap does not heal correctly, it can cause irregularities in the surface of the eye, such as wrinkling or bulges, which can produce vision problems.

Diffuse lamellar keratitis (DLK), also known as "Sands of the Sahara," may be caused by cellular material trapped underneath the corneal flap. This can cause the eye to bulge, resulting in permanent scarring and loss of vision if it is not dealt with properly.

Other custom LASIK complications could arise during surgery such as malfunction of the instruments or loss of a corneal flap. It is also possible that you may be over- or undercorrected; however, this is very unlikely because the laser is guided by a computer that uses extremely precise Wavefront™ data. It is important to discuss custom LASIK risks and your concerns with a doctor. It's also important to thoroughly research different surgeons before making a final decision on which one will perform your surgery.

Is Custom LASIK Safer than Traditional LASIK?

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks associated custom LASIK. However, when compared with conventional LASIK, custom LASIK has far fewer risks and complications following surgery, making it the safer of the two procedures. Mapping the cornea helps to tailor the procedure to each patient's individual features, so there is less room for errors that could affect your quality of vision. The incidence of problems such as halos, glare, decreased night vision, and blurriness is also far less with custom LASIK.

Find a LASIK Eye Doctor Today

If you are considering custom LASIK to improve your vision, it is important to talk to an eye doctor about the different custom LASIK risks and complications. During a consultation, he or she can fully explain these and other considerations before you make your decision. Find a qualified eye surgeon to answer your questions about custom LASIK surgery.

Custom LASIK Benefits

Custom laser vision correction, also known as custom LASIK surgery, has benefits you can literally see. No more sitting out for swimming. No more watching basketball games from the sidelines. No more fumbling for your contacts every morning. No more seeing life through the lenses of your glasses. Custom LASIK provides more than just correction for your visual acuity. In addition to correcting lower-order visual aberrations such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, it also treats more complex higher-order aberrations. Below is some general information on custom LASIK and its benefits.

Individualized Custom Laser Vision Correction

There are two structures that focus light on the retina at the back of your eye: the cornea (the clear surface at the front of the eye) and the lens (a dome-shaped structure behind the colored part of the eye). In a perfectly shaped eye, the two parts would be smooth and perfectly curved. However, in reality, no eye is perfectly shaped. Like a fingerprint, everyone has a distinctly different corneal surface with unique contours and flaws. These imperfections cause light entering the eye to refract incorrectly onto the retina. When the resulting images are out of focus, the person is said to suffer from nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) or astigmatism.

The custom LASIK procedure takes this into account and accommodates your particular corneal landscape to produce the most effective results. Custom LASIK laser vision correction is catered to the unique nature of each individual's eyes. The proven track record of custom LASIK surgery speaks for itself. In an FDA study of custom LASIK patients, almost 98 percent of the participants had 20/20 vision or better one year after surgery. With conventional LASIK surgery, only 75 percent of participants experienced that kind of vision.

Custom LASIK also benefits individuals with larger pupils, which increase the risk of potential complications following traditional LASIK. Conventional LASIK may not be an option for these patients, and custom LASIK is the only way they can reduce their dependency on glasses. Custom laser vision correction can also improve vision for those who have already undergone conventional LASIK surgery with less than optimal results.

Wavefront™ Technology

The Wavefront™-guided technology responsible for this advancement allows LASIK surgeons to create a three-dimensional map of the surface of your cornea. Using this precise information to guide laser corrections, doctors can shape the corneal tissue precisely to improve vision for each individual patient's needs. Correcting Higher-Order Visual Aberrations

Certain vision problems such as poor night vision, haze, glare, starbursts, and halos are more complicated than typical refractive errors. These high order visual aberrations usually result from tiny flaws in the surface of the cornea. Conventional LASIK surgery does not address the causes of these "higher-order" aberrations.

Custom LASIK benefits patients with existing higher-order aberrations by allowing doctors to tailor a custom laser vision correction specific to the individual flaws that cause these problems. Three-dimensional mapping of the eye shows the exact layout of the individual's cornea, allowing the surgeon to effectively smooth away and remove the flaws during surgery.

Higher-order aberrations can sometimes result from complications associated with traditional LASIK. When this happens, custom LASIK can treat the corneal irregularities responsible for these types of vision problems.

Predictably Crisp, Clear Results

Studies have shown that custom LASIK surgery produces crisper, clearer vision than conventional LASIK surgery. Due to the nature of laser surgery and the use of ultraviolet light to vaporize corneal tissue, there is always a degree of higher-order aberrations created in the process. However, custom LASIK benefits patients by correcting individual aberrations that are present prior to surgery. Following the procedure, only about half of the distorting aberrations arise that generally accompany conventional LASIK. In a study by the Food and Drug Administration, 98 percent of custom LASIK patients experienced 20/20 vision or better one year after surgery.

Improved Night Vision

"Contrast sensitivity" refers to your ability to distinguish between an object and its background. Poor night vision associated with low contrast sensitivity is one of the more complex higher-order aberrations that can only be improved through custom LASIK surgery. With Wavefront™-guided technology, doctors can three-dimensionally map the surface of the cornea, detailing the sources of poor night vision and other aberrations so that they can be treated during surgery.

People with large pupils also tend to experience problems with night vision. Custom laser vision correction benefits these patients by treating the corneal irregularities responsible for this problem. The procedure also greatly reduces the chance of developing problems with night vision following custom LASIK.
